Headline from yesterday’s New York Times: “Trump Rescinds Rules on Bathrooms for Transgender Students.”
Just like that, transgender kids, who deserve not to be used as political fodder, have been stripped of the basic right to use the bathroom at school.
One wonders where Caitlin Jenner, nee Bruce, stands on this. If Trump has his way, Caitlin will be standing at a urinal in the men’s room, Donna Karan couture and all.
A Trump supporter, Jenner wore a gown with a plunging neckline to the president’s pre-inaugural dinner on Jan. 19. During a visit to New York last year, Jenner supposedly was told by Trump to use whatever bathroom she wanted in any of his buildings. Jenner took him up on the offer and used the women’s facilities in the Trump International Hotel and Tower.
In an April 2016 interview on NBC’s Today show, Trump said people should use “whatever bathroom they feel is appropriate.”
So what happened? And why is Jenner silent?
One celebrity who has challenged Trump on this issue is teen singer Jackie Evancho, who drew criticism for performing the National Anthem at the inauguration. It’s a personal issue for Evancho, who has a transgender sister.
Evancho appeared Thursday on ABC’s Good Morning America with her 18-year-old sister, Juliet, to ask for a meeting with President Trump so she can “enlighten him on what I’ve seen my sister go through every single day in school and people just like her, what they deal with.” The singer said she had made a request through Twitter to talk with the president, but had heard nothing yet.
Juliet Evancho, born Jacob, also took part in the on-air interview.
“Basically that being at a high school where the policies on the bathroom are unclear, I — as Jackie has said — kind of live it every day, going through discrimination. I’ve had things thrown at me, I’ve had people say pretty horrible things. The unsafe environment is just very unhealthy,” Juliet said. “I feel like Donald Trump needs to know that being in such an unsafe environment won’t do any good for the transgender and LGBT community but as well as everyone as a whole.”
I’d like to wish the Misses Evancho good luck with that. Until and unless Ivanka comes out as Ivan, Trump isn’t going to listen to anyone except the trolls around him and the evil voices in his own head.
Meanwhile, I don’t intend to ask the other women in the ladies’ room at Macy’s to prove their right to pee in the stall next to mine. And I hope no one gets bullied, beaten or worse because the idiot in chief has apparently nothing better to do than speculate on what happens in the restroom.
