The statute of limitations has passed. Trumpers don’t deserve forgiveness.

It’s one of those unanswerable chicken-or-the-egg type questions, but one that occupied my mind. Who did I despise more, Donald Trump or the braying, MAGA-hatted jackasses who foisted him upon us?

In trying to come up with an answer the question morphed into another: Will I ever be able to forgive the people who voted for Trump, or even the ones who didn’t think the choice before us back in 2016 was important enough to go to the polls?

During a rare weak moment, I reasoned that it might be possible to forgive first-time Trump supporters who mind-bogglingly missed all of Trump’s race-baiting during the campaign, or who “didn’t want to choose the lesser of two evils,” or who “just wanted to shake things up” in Washington.

While it’s a real stretch for me to believe someone could have missed the blatant bigotry at Trump’s rallies or failed to see his open displays of stupidity during the debates, I am aware that there are people in this world who are, to put it kindly, ill-informed. During my weak moment I was willing to admit that such people might have simply been more ignorant than, er, deplorable. I told myself I could forgive them if they would just admit they were wrong. I would never expect them to grovel or kiss my shoe, their act of contrition could be something as simple as saying, “I’m sorry.”

That’s what I told myself then, but a day later while driving on Interstate 80 in New Jersey I saw something that gave me clarity and pushed all thoughts of forgiveness from my mind:

Of course I already knew Trump was running for re-election, but somehow seeing the evidence in real time instead of once-removed on a TV screen crystalized everything. While I might have been willing to forgive some people from 2016 for being dumb as rocks and living life in a vacuum, I realized that’s no longer the case. There’s simply no way so many of them could have missed all that’s happened since.

Yet they will vote for Trump a second time!

I’ve decided there has to be a statute of limitations for Trump supporters to come back to the light, and we are long past it. No more can we delude ourselves that Trump supporters are quaint rustics who simply don’t know any better. So much dirty water has passed under the bridge since 2016 that even the most kindhearted among us must declare that Trump supporters aren’t just stupid, they are culpable.

These are people who saw Charlottesville; saw children in cages; saw Trump’s refusal to follow the rule of law; saw him enrich himself at the American people’s expense; saw him pay off a porn star; saw him pander to Russian President Vladimir Putin; saw him lie, lie, lie about anything and everything. Make no mistake, Trump supporters saw all that you saw but instead of the righteous indignation you feel, their reaction is to double down. “Children in cages?” they’re saying. “Hell yeah, give me more of that!”

And for the record, not a single Trump supporter I know (and there are many) has ever come to me and admitted they were wrong.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Hillary Clinton paid dearly for one remark, but she should get points for being right: Trump supporters were a “basket of deplorables” then and they’re still a basket of deplorables now.

Set aside all thoughts of charity. Trump supporters, like their president, are criminally insane. They are beyond redemption, and we forget that at our peril.

  1. I have a few friends and acquaintances who voted for Con Donnie. And this is what I have noticed. In speaking with them over a coffee, when the subject of Trump comes up and the deplorable ineptitude of his entire administration, to say nothing of the lies, spin, propaganda and ignorance of history, geography and of course alternative facts; they all seem to turn to “whataboutism”. If you mention how Trump is fleecing the Population, they invariable say well what about Hilary and her emails or some such nonsense. One of my friends admitted that he has been a life-long Republican but will not be voting for Trump again. Another said I have not been to see you lately because each time I meet you I feel I have to apologize for Trump.
So there is light at the end of the tunnel. Trump will long with his crooked, arrogant and greedy brood be given time to explain themselves. All of his sycophants will be dismissed with him to the trash heap of ne’er-do-wells. Soon we the voters will begin the slow process of healing our country and Making the US great again.

  2. I’m more angry with those who can’t bother to get up off their asses and vote. If this corrupt administration has its way, many more people will be disenfranchised. You don’t get to sing “God Bless America” and get all misty-eyed over the flag and then not participate in our democracy in the most basic of ways.

  3. I feel the same way you do about those who voted for Trump, but especially about those who STILL support him. But I have to tell you that Mitch McConnell has descended to an even lower level than Trump, himself. McConnell is Trump’s chief enabler in Congress, he stood in the way of Merrick Garland’s SCOTUS nomination on the notion that SCOTUS nominations shouldn’t be considered in an election year. But when asked the other day about a seat that could open up in 2020, an election year, he said he’d push it through. Trump is a moron, but McConnell is a seasoned politician and a remarkable hypocrite. And that puts him, in my opinion, at the top of the heap of the deplorables.

  4. My dad is a devout Evangelical Christian, and I asked him about the way people like him continue to support a guy who constantly, unapologetically, violates every supposed rule of Christianity. All he could tell me was the tripe he hears every Sunday morning and Wednesday night- that Jesus has forgiven Donald, so we have to, to.

Makes me glad yet again that I ditched the church years ago and never looked back.

  5. Fabulous piece Glenn. When I ask the Trumplicans on Conservative media to name just two things he’s done to MAGA, I have yet to get a reply. Mitch has to be one of the most unattractive humans I’ve ever seen. Onward to the end.😎🌈

    1. Thanks Fred! Yeah, Trumpers are never truthful in explaining their adoration of him because if they were they’d have to just admit it’s because they’re bigots.

  6. Interesting takes on Christianity and supporting Trump and company. Jefferson: “In every country and in every age, the priest has always been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own”. Lincoln: “The Bible is not my book, and Christianity is not my religion. I could never give assent to the long complicated statements of Christian dogma” Imagine, if you will, Jefferson and Lincoln walking side by side down the road of Democracy, with Jefferson reaching out his left hand holding back the Left and Lincoln’s right hand pushing back against the Right. In that little middle space between those twin giants of freedom for the people dwells Democracy. Most compelling.
Many people compare Trump and company to Hitler and 1920’s and 30’s Germany and seeding in America, and rightly so. A good comparison between the Trump individual. family, and company with the Pierce Butler individual, family, and company is worth a good look.
